NFC business cards, explained

An NFC business card is a physical card with a chip inside. A client taps their phone against it and a page opens — for barbers, stylists, nail techs, and trainers, that page should be the one where they book. This is how the cards work, what they cost, and how to get one working in an afternoon.

What is inside the card

The chip is an NFC tag: a small amount of memory and a copper antenna printed between the layers of the card. It has no battery. The phone held against it supplies the power, reads the link stored in memory, and shows a notification. Cards keep working for years because there is nothing in them to run out.

What a tap actually does

  • The client holds their phone near the top of the card.
  • A notification appears with your link — no app, no download, no pairing.
  • They tap it and your page opens in their browser.
  • From there they hit Book Now, call or text you, or scroll your recent work.

The page is the part that matters. A card that dumps someone onto a Linktree full of dead links wastes the tap. A card that opens a page with a single obvious booking button turns the tap into an appointment.

NFC cards vs. paper cards vs. QR codes

  • Paper cards cost the least and get thrown out. Nothing about them is editable after printing.
  • QR codes work, but need to be seen, framed in a camera, and focused — awkward at a chair, in a gym, or in low light.
  • NFC cards work by touch, in the dark, without the client hunting for a camera app. And because the link is editable, the card outlives your current booking software.

What they cost

Blank NFC cards run a few dollars each. What varies is the page behind them: many services charge a monthly subscription per card. A TapBook Connect card includes the page — you buy the card, set the page up yourself, and it stays live.

Setting one up

Your card is encoded before it ships. Sign in with it, and the setup checklist walks you through a photo, your specialty and location, your booking link, contact buttons, and a few pieces of recent work. Press Go Live and the page is public. Nothing needs to be programmed with an NFC writing app, and reprinting is never required — editing the page updates every card you have already handed out.

Common questions

How do NFC business cards work?

An NFC business card has a tiny chip and antenna inside it. When a phone is held against the card, the phone powers the chip and reads a link stored on it, then offers to open that link. There is no battery, no charging, and no app for the person tapping the card.

Do NFC business cards need an app?

No. Every iPhone from the XR onward and nearly every modern Android reads NFC tags with the built-in operating system. The person tapping your card just sees a notification with your link and taps it.

Are NFC business cards safe?

The card stores a web link and nothing else — no payment data and no contact list. It can only be read from a couple of centimeters away, so it cannot be scanned from across a room. On a TapBook Connect card the link points at your own page, and you control what appears there.

Are NFC business cards worth it?

They are worth it when you rely on repeat clients. A paper card gets thrown away and an Instagram handle gets forgotten; a tap that opens your booking page turns the moment someone is interested into a booked appointment. How do you set up an NFC business card?
